Aljezur
Nice hillside town on the Algarve's unspoilt by mass tourisms' west coast.
For hundreds of years agriculture was, and is, Aljezur's main economic activity but its sharing more and more in the social and economic renewal of the Algarve.
The damage caused by the 1755 earthquake led to the construction of a new settlement across from Aljezur, called Igreja Nova.
Nearby beaches (Arrifana, Monte Clérigo and Vale de Figueiras) are ideal for windsurfing and surfing.
Aljezur is a small market town with two parts divided by a fertile river valley. Its hilltop Moorish Castle offering nice views to the surrounding countryside dominates the old part. It was settled by the Moors in the 10th century and re-conquered in 1246.
Several spectacular, almost unspoiled beaches are located in the vicinity. You can easily reach Amoreira, Monte Clerigo and Arrifana from the village of Odeceixe, 18km north to Aljezur on the N120.
